Rescue fire officer
Applications are being sought for Rescue Fire Officers. We welcome suitable applicants from all relevant backgrounds and sectors to apply for the role.
Firefighting experience is preferred, but we will be considering applicants with other relevant experience as the required training will be provided to be proficient and successful in the role.
You must be physically fit and able to pass a pre-employment fitness test and medical, and an Aviation Security check. You will be working on a rotating 24-hour roster (4 days on, 4 days off).
About us:
Palmerston North Airport Ltd is one of a handful of New Zealand airports which operate 24/7 and are curfew free. With up to forty flights per day, scheduled passenger air services link Palmerston North Airport to Auckland, Nelson, Blenheim and Christchurch. Air service development is a key priority at Palmerston North Airport with the reintroduction of scheduled domestic jet services likely in the short term.
Palmerston North is also a key node on the New Zealand express freight network, with 20 Boeing 737 freighter movements operating overnight each week.
Palmerston North Airport is entering an exciting phase in its evolution, with a new 5,000m2 terminal building currently under construction and an 8,000m2 warehouse & office complex to commence in the new year. Additional airside hangars for aeromedical tenants and a commercial precinct are also in the planning phase.

The Role:
We are currently looking to expand our team of Rescue Fire Officers from six to nine personnel, to provide a cross-section of responsibilities:
- First-responder for all airport emergencies (fire, medical, rescue)
- Wildlife management
- Airfield inspections
- Airfield works supervision
- Security surveillance and response
- Grounds maintenance/management
What experience and skills are we looking for?
- Ideally, previous experience working as a firefighter (including voluntary)
- Minimum of a Class 2 drivers’ licence, with the ability to gain a Class 4
- Have a current NZ Firearms Licence and First Aid Certificate (preferred, but not essential)
What sort of person do we need?
We need pro-active team members with a positive disposition, and the ability to communicate accurately and confidently with a diverse range of people across different levels; someone who can work autonomously but also as part of a team. You will need to be competent and calm in high-pressure situations. Ongoing training is a requirement of the role, so you will need to be open to new learnings and ideas, able to analyse any problems, and offer solutions.
