Airfield operations manager
PNAL is seeking an Airfield Operations Manager to lead the airport fire service function and oversee day-to-day airfield operations. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll drive team performance, work to continually improve operational discipline, whilst ensuring a safe, compliant airport environment.
You’ll act as a trusted 2IC to the Safety & Operations Manager, taking ownership of the day-to-day running of the airfield and airport fire service team. This role is critical in enhancing team engagement, strengthening accountability, and embedding a strong One Team culture.
About us:
Palmerston North Airport Ltd is one of a handful of New Zealand airports which operate 24/7 and are curfew free. With up to forty flights per day, scheduled passenger air services link Palmerston North Airport to Auckland, Nelson, Blenheim and Christchurch. Air service development is a key priority at Palmerston North Airport with the reintroduction of scheduled domestic jet services likely in the short term.
Palmerston North is also a key node on the New Zealand express freight network, with 20 Boeing 737 freighter movements operating overnight each week.
Palmerston North Airport is entering an exciting phase in its evolution, with a new 5,000m2 terminal building currently under construction and an 8,000m2 warehouse & office complex to commence in the new year. Additional airside hangars for aeromedical tenants and a commercial precinct are also in the planning phase.

The Role:
- Lead, coach, and develop the Rescue Fire Station team and Team Leader
- Oversee airfield operations including safety, compliance, wildlife management, and works coordination
- Maintain Civil Aviation Rule compliance and audit readiness
- Manage emergency response, incidents, and operational risk
- Own rostering, training programmes, and performance management
- Coordinate contractors, stakeholders, and emergency services
- Drive continuous improvement across systems, processes, and team capability
What we’re looking for:
- Proven leader with experience in high-risk or regulated environments
- Background in operations, emergency services, aviation, infrastructure, or similar
- Strong understanding of risk, compliance, and safety systems
- Experience with training, rostering, and performance management
- Calm, resilient, and decisive under pressure
- Strong communicator who can build trust, coach, and hold people to account
- Aviation experience is advantageous, but not essential
